We have heard Democrat politicians for years talk about how America needs “immigration reform”, and it has even become a major plot in their election campaigns… but what started all of this talk? I can say (sadly) that I am old enough to remember exactly when and what started this whole argument of immigration reform, and the answer may surprise you if you’re a young Democrat.
Back in 1993 while Bill Clinton was beginning his first term as president, he sparked something that became to be known as “Nannygate“. This was when Bill wanted to nominate Zoë Baird as the first woman to be United States Attorney General. It was found out that Baird and her husband had broken the law by employing two illegal aliens from Peru as a nanny and chauffeur for their young child. They had also failed to pay Social Security taxes for the workers until shortly before the disclosures. After eight days of scrutiny Baird’s name was withdrawn from the nomination. The following month, Bill’s choice of federal judge Kimba Wood for the job was leaked to the press, but within a day it became known that she too had employed an undocumented immigrant to look after her child. Not surprisingly the Clinton’s were not concerned with hiring of illegal immigrants – since they too had hired illegals, but had fired them when it became a public issue.
Nannygate sparked press investigations into the hired help of politicians, and it turned up that many other political figures (mostly Democrat) had employed illegal immigrants as nanny’s, grounds keepers, chauffeur’s, and other low skilled jobs. From the fallout of the press dirt digging, Democrat politicians started bell ringing for immigration reform.
In the years following Nannygate Democrat politicians used “immigration reform” in their election campaigns but ever followed through with a good proposal in congress. Democrats also used the illegal worker findings to their advantage to discredit Republican candidates like Meg Whitman in 2010 who ran against Jerry Brown for Governor of California. Brown brought it to light that Whitman employed an illegal as a housekeeper, and used this to discredit and defeat Whitman in the election.
Democrat politicians seem to favor the hiring of illegal immigrants when it suites their personal purpose, but they will vigorously use such hiring actions against a Republican during an election. Don’t you see the hypocrisy in any of this? Illegals are paid non-reported cheap wage income, and do not pay into Social Security or other taxes – thus saving lots of money for the employer.
If you’re not yet convinced that Democrat politicians are only using illegal immigrants for their benefit, here’s another does for you to digest…
In 1994 California voters passed Proposition 187 (also known as the Save Our State (SOS) initiative) that was a ballot initiative to establish a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibit illegal immigrants from using non-emergency health care, public education, and other services in the state of California. Supporters argued that the state could not afford to provide social services for so many illegal residents. The law was challenged in a legal suit and found unconstitutional by a federal district court, and in 1999 Democrat Governor Gray Davis halted state appeals of this ruling. Only months into his second term, in 2003 Davis was recalled and removed from office, but the damage was already done to Proposition 187.
Since that instance Jerry Brown not only signed into law bills that gave illegals state benefits, he also gave illegals a California drivers license. Brown also singed a law that automatically registered EVERY California licensed driver to vote. Democrat politicians in California are now able to hire illegals for personal services without opposition, and they will benefit from illegals voting for them in elections.
The bottom line here in common sense language is that Democrat politicians do not care about the well being of an illegal immigrant, they only care of how they can benefit from the illegal immigrant. If it were Republicans doing all of this, then you can bet that the Democrats would raise such an opposition that America had not seen since the Civil War.
Keep something in mind here – It’s the Democrats who are the ones that are truly against immigrants, not Republicans. Democrats want only cheap labor and votes, and Democrats will say anything to make people believe that they care. That falls under the old “humanitarian” excuse that they love to use to gain public support. Republicans on the other hand would consider an overhaul of the immigration process to make it easier to become a citizen, but not in the form of “amnesty” with instant citizenship like Obama is trying to do. That would not be fair to current citizens who can’t even find employment now.
Remember, there’s a whole new threat to immigration other than cheap labor that take away jobs from American citizens – there’s the terrorists factor now. Opening our borders to anyone and everyone will no doubt make America a more dangerous place to live, so we do need to be cautious and careful… more than being fair.
If immigrants want to come to America to adapt and join our society they should first have to be screened to weed out the criminals and terrorists. They should be required to learn and abide by our laws and Constitution, and immigrants should truly want to merge with other Americans as one society – not create segregated and separate little societies within our borders. They also should not be given a free pass just because they jumped the border.
